“You have three seconds! Start moving,” warned Dusty. “One.”

I didn’t like it at all.

“Two.”

The big man hadn’t moved.

Then as Dusty started to say “Three” the man edged towards the solid trunk of the tree and grudgingly climbed down.

We gave a group sigh of relief.

“Just in time!” I muttered, then suddenly felt Bindi glaring at me.

I looked up and frowned, then it hit me. “T-I-M-E,” I spluttered. “Not T-H-Y-M-E!”

Bindi relaxed and then nodded as the climber reached the lowest sawn-off branch stubs.

On the ground, the man carefully laid his bowsaw at the base of the tree, never taking his eyes off Dusty. But Dusty was now in total control. I had never seen such bravery.

“Now a few questions,” said Dusty. The big man hung his head. “I think we can save the tree but it’s lost a lot of blood … sap. It’s lost most of its limbs but I think we can save it. What I need to know is why you did it. Why did you attack this fine tree?”

The man looked silently at his feet.

We waited.

“Answer the question!” snapped Dusty so suddenly that I jumped.

“Nothing grows under big trees,” the big man muttered. “No wild flowers. Not even weeds.”

We waited again and something stirred in my memory.

“Told to do it,” he mumbled defiantly.

“Told?” we all said together.

The man looked up and nodded, lips sealed.

“Who? Who would do that?” demanded Dusty.

“Nettle and Thistle,” admitted the big man reluctantly.

Dusty nodded knowingly.

I knew the names too. They were the Topiary Twins! Nettle and Thistle.

But I didn’t know anything about them … yet. How did they get such a bad reputation?
